What We Do

We test your home to highlight airborne mold/contaminant issues (“spore trap testing”) and a radioactive cancer-causing gas called radon that is the #1 cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.

Radon Testing

Radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring, inert radioactive gas that comes from the decay of radium is the only gaseous element of the long, uranium-238 radioactive decay chain. Uranium and radium are commonly found in soil and rocks around the world. People can be exposed to radon primarily from breathing radon-laden air that enters through cracks and gaps in the building’s foundation. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Academy of Sciences and the Center for Disease Control, indoor radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer in non- smokers, responsible for more than 20,000 U.S. lung cancer deaths each year. When you breathe in radon, radioactive particles from radon gas can get trapped in your lungs, where they can damage DNA as they release alpha radiation.  The only way to know your home or building contains dangerous radon levels is to have a test performed.

Mold Testing

Mold and harmful airborne contaminants are everywhere—indoors and outdoors.  They’re only potentially harmful when they land in the right conditions and form a colony.

When you question whether your chronic health ailments might be due to your environment or want to ensure the health of your kids and/or family, Tidy Air Systems can measure the kind and concentration of airborne mold and other contaminants utilizing our airborne sampling methods.  We perform “spore trap” tests that collect airborne contaminants in an exact volume of air and place them onto a glass slide specially formulated for laboratory use.  Once analyzed, a detailed report is provided identifying excess concentrations vs. outdoor air, which will be used by a mold mitigation company specializing in reduction and/or removal of problem contaminants.

How It Works

After selecting which test(s) you want—mold, radon or both--Tidy Air Systems will schedule a house call with  you to “talk air”.

If we’re testing for mold, you will direct us to the problem area and we’ll fill one chambers with air at a rate of 15 liters of air per minute for anywhere between 2-5 minutes per chamber.  Next, we’ll head outdoors and take another sample with which to compare your house sample.  Testing turnaround times are usually within 7-10 days.

If we’re testing for radon, we will arrive with a state-of-the-art computer-controlled electronic testing device that has four separate chambers to measure radon and radon decay products.  This device will perform hourly measurements of other environmental conditions which will prove to be immeasurably valuable in the event that your home tests high for radon and you will save precious time and money leveraging our computerized data collection.

Radon tests take at least 52 hours to complete and, depending on the weather, can take longer.  It is very important that you keep all windows and doors closed (except for entering and exiting your home) for 12 hours prior to and the entire time during your radon measurement test.
